Saul Eslake

Saul Eslake is a leading Australian economist with more than 25 years’ experience in financial markets, including senior roles as Chief Economist at ANZ, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (Australia & New Zealand), and McIntosh Securities, as well as Chief Economist (International) at National Mutual Funds Management.
He was Director of the Productivity Growth Program at the Grattan Institute before establishing his own economics consultancy in Hobart in 2015. He also serves as a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Tasmania.
Saul has advised multiple Australian governments on fiscal policy, including reviews of Tasmania’s public sector finances and assessments of government business divestments, and is currently advising an ACT Legislative Assembly Select Committee on fiscal sustainability. He is also a member of the Australian Parliamentary Budget Office Advisory Panel, the Australian Taxation Office Tax Gap Advisory Panel, the Advisory Board of Jamieson Coote Bonds, and the Board of the Council on the Ageing.
He holds a first-class Honours degree in Economics from the University of Tasmania, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Australia, completed the Senior Executive Program at Columbia University, and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) by the University of Tasmania in 2012.
