Acclaimed author, journalist, editor and science communicator and principal of Julian Cribb & Associates, Julian Cribb provides the opening address to BeefEx delegates: Much has been written about food scarcity – but how close is the reality of this in terms of its impact on agriculture, on red meat production, and the terms of trade on our farms and feedlots? Julian Cribb believes that we have the capacity to mitigate the impact – but notes it will require remarkable collaboration to achieve.

Social researcher Mark McCrindle draws on his understanding of consumer savvy to consider how tomorrow’s consumer will view grain fed beef, against a background of emerging food scarcity

Coal Seam Gas and its impact on water: The CSG industry has grown by more than 6,000% since 1997 and is set to experience similar growth trends into the future. However, the industry has also been criticised for its current and future potential impact upon the quality and quantity of ground and surface water. David Free from the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management provides an insight into what impact this may have on agriculture and the feedlot sector in particular.

12.20 The Lot Feeder's Perspective
Simon Drury from the Condabri Feedlot in Miles, QLD provides his story about the impact of CSG on his business

10.40 The psychology of good decision making in tough times: Dennis Hoiberg from Lessons Learnt Consulting has worked extensively with the rural sector and understands the frustration of decision making in a business where weather, the Australian dollar and market forces can out-strip even the most conservative decisions. So what constitutes a good business decision in this environment? Dennis explains.
11.10 A matter of currency: With the Australian dollar approaching parity with the US and the Yen devaluing the Australian dollar, there is a new era of risk emerging for the feedlot business and it appears to be currency.
